Description

This complex includes case stores built in 1865 and subsequently rebuilt between 1877 and 1883, along with a later Rolling Way and a two-story gabled building of 1901. The 1865 case store is a long, narrow brick range with a low-pitched hipped slate roof, constructed in modified Flemish bond. It features four six-pane windows and one eight-pane window. Attached to the south end is a two-story gabled brick building with a slate roof, constructed in 1901 and containing four bays with vertical windows set under concrete lintels. The 1901 building, now a conference center, incorporates a mid-20th century addition and retains a wood-block floor and king-post trusses, thought to have replaced an earlier structure on the site.

To the east side of the 1865 case store is a brick-walled lean-to forming the Rolling Way. This allowed explosives to be transported from the harbor to the nearby Laboratory complex. The case stores were used to house shells, each individually packed into wooden boxes, reflecting the introduction of shell ordnance into naval service. The Rolling Way is a remnant of the tramway system established in the 1860s, linking 'C' Magazine with the Laboratory and related shell-filling facilities, and represents a key expansion of the site's historical role. The structures at Priddy’s Hard, dating from the late 18th century onwards, are crucial to understanding the navy’s transition to a new era of artillery and naval power.
