Description
The Case Store located to the west side of the Camber in the Museum Buildings was built around 1879. This store, made of brick with a slate roof supported by a collar rafter structure, is a small hipped unit positioned end-on to the Camber. It features a pair of plank doors with a concrete lintel at one end and small-pane casements along each long side. Inside, there is a compound roof with iron tie bars supporting the rafters.
Historically, this store was likely constructed as part of a new shell filling system. The case stores at Priddy's Hard are situated around the magazine complex that developed from the late 18th century near its small harbour. All these structures date from the latter half of the 19th century and are linked to the introduction of shells into naval service, which significantly changed the operations of key naval depots and the design of naval ships and fortifications. Each shell was packed in its own wooden box before being loaded onto ships.
The magazines and related buildings at Priddy's Hard date back to the late 18th century, and the site's expansion from the mid-19th century was closely tied to advancements in land and sea artillery, as well as the navy's shift from traditional sailing ships to the Dreadnought class in the early 1900s. Priddy's Hard is notable for having the best-preserved collection of structures that reflect this significant history of growth and adaptation, which is integral to Britain's historical maritime dominance.
