Description

The HMS L55 Memorial is a commemorative monument dedicated to a naval disaster that occurred in 1919, built in 1928. It is made from dressed limestone and features a screen design with a stepped arched head set on a shallow rectangular base. The die has a raised border and five raised panels. The central panel includes the inscription ‘1914-1919’ and is engraved with the words: ‘HERE ARE RECORDED / THE NAMES / OF THOSE OFFICERS / AND MEN OF / HM SUBMARINE L55 / SUNK / IN THE BALTIC ON / THE 4TH JUNE 1919 / WHO LIE BURIED / IN THIS GRAVE’. The four outer panels list the names of the 42 victims, arranged alphabetically along with their ranks and ages.
