Description
The HMS Eurydice Memorial, built in 1878, commemorates a ship that foundered. It features a dressed grey granite base that is rectangular in shape, topped with a limestone sculpture that incorporates the ship's anchor.
The memorial includes a sloping granite plinth that lists the names of the 362 deceased. Above this plinth is a prominent model of a rock, which has the inscription ‘FOUNDERED / SUNDAY MARCH 9 / 1878’ carved into it, with the ship's anchor placed on top. The four sides of the base of the sculpture are engraved with Bible passages: ‘I WILL BRING MY PEOPLE AGAIN FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA. PSA LXVII:22 / WHICH HOPE WE HAVE AS AN ANCHOR OF THE SOUL. HEB VI:19 / AND THE SEA GAVE UP THE DEAD WHICH WERE IN IT. REV XX:13 / MY GOD IS THE ROCK OF MY REFUGE. PSA XCIV:22’.
