Description
The water tower at the Royal Naval Hospital in Haslar was built between 1881 and 1885. It is constructed of red brick with limestone dressings and features a lead pyramidal roof, showcasing an Italianate style. The tower has a square plan and includes a tall battered plinth leading to a band with a round-arched entrance. The sides are adorned with two-stage narrow windows set within round-arched surrounds, which have stone frames, transom panels, and rusticated keys to the hood moulds, all beneath a bracketed cornice. The upper stage, which houses the water tank, has two keyed oculi on each side, supported by deep timber bracketed eaves. The roof features a simpler upper stage with additional oculi, brackets, and a weather vane. To the north, there is a single-storey range that may have housed the steam-powered pumps. Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to contain a ladder leading through the open lower section to the tank. This tower replaced an earlier structure from 1855 when the sewerage system was updated. It is characteristic of 19th-century waterworks architecture and serves as a local landmark within the well-preserved 18th-century hospital complex.
