Description
The White Friars Hotel is a building that dates back to 1721, with its oldest part being a stone and brick crow-stepped chimney breast on the north-east wall from the 16th century. The main façade faces south-east and features two storeys and an attic, with nine windows and three dormers. The exterior is constructed of red brick with grey headers, covered in creepers, and includes a string course and eaves cornice. The hipped tiled roof is adorned with casement windows that have small square leaded panes. The entrance features a doorway with a flat hood supported by brackets, and above it is a stone sundial dated 1721, which displays the initials B. I. M. and the arms of the Benbridge family.
On the north-east front, there is a stone Venetian window on the ground floor with Ionic pilasters, alongside a doorway with fluted Ionic half-columns and a six-panel fielded door, flanked by side-lights. Above this, a tile-hung bay has been constructed on brick pillars. The north-west entrance front has six windows and consists of four short parallel ranges at right angles to the main wing, each topped with a gable and a chimney at its apex. A modern wing has been added to the south side. Inside, the hotel features bolection-moulded panelling from around 1721 and a plaster ceiling in the dining room.
