Description

Japonica Cottage, Post Office Cottage, and Scolfes are three cottages and a restaurant that were formerly a post office and stores, originally built as a house around 1394. The building features a stone cellar and a three-bay open hall of Wealden type. A timber fireplace was added to the hall in the mid-16th century, and a late 16th-century crosswing was constructed to the east. A 17th-century fireplace was inserted into the open hall, and around 1700, a crosswing was added, which likely served as a mercer's shop (now Japonica Cottage). The building was refurbished around 1765 by John Holland and has a 20th-century shopfront.

The structure is timber-framed, with the ground floor cement rendered and the first floor weatherboarded. It has a tiled roof with a half-hipped gable at the east end and stands two storeys tall with five windows, mainly sash windows with 16 panes. Post Office Cottage is a single storey with casement windows. The rear elevation retains two late 16th-century hollow chamfered mullioned windows.

Inside, there is a stone barrel-vaulted cellar with a blocked entrance to Scolfes, and the first floor retains an open truss with decorated moulding. The late 16th-century crosswing features ogee bracing, and the front framing of the mid-16th-century timber chimney is still intact. Around 1700, a crosswing with one room on each floor was added to the east, featuring a staggered butt purlin roof. The roofs from the 14th and late 16th centuries were replaced around 1765.
