Description
Carter’s Corner Place, now divided into three dwellings, dates to 1602. It was originally built by and served as the long-time residence of the Barton family, and was later enlarged around 1920 by the first Lord Hailsham. The house is constructed of red and grey vitreous brick with a tiled roof and casement windows featuring stone mullions and transoms. It is three storeys high with an attic. The main south-east facing front displays a half H-shape, with three windows. The wings feature gables, incorporating attic windows and kneelers surmounted by ball finials on tall bases, with similar detailing above the apex of each gable. The centre portion has a moulded brick eaves cornice and a gabled dormer with matching kneelers and finials. Ground floor windows and those within the gables have two tiers of five lights each. A central four-centred stone doorway is topped by a stone drip-stone, with the date 1602 and the initials I.B. carved into the spandrels. The south-east wing extends to the north-west, displaying four windows and two gabled dormers, lacking finials, facing south. A modern L-shaped addition of two windows facing south is located at the north-west end, forming three sides of a courtyard on the north-east side. The west side of the east wing, facing the courtyard, has one gable, irregular fenestration, and a small gabled window bay added at the north end.
