Description

The Parish Church of St Mary is an impressive medieval building located on Westham High Street. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings and features a tiled roof. The church includes a chancel, a north chapel, a south transept, a nave with a north aisle, a north porch, and a west tower. It is believed to have originally served as the church for the Hospital of St Cross, situated outside the west gate of Pevensey. The arcade of the nave, north aisle, north porch, and tower is made of stone and flints arranged in a chequer pattern, dating from around 1300. The chancel dates from the 15th century. Inside, the nave boasts a fine timbered roof with crownposts at the west end and queenposts in the main section. The east window features 15th-century stained glass in its tracery heads.
