Description
This is a model farm yard, dated 1808, and shows stylistic influence from Samuel Wyatt. The farmyard occupies three sides of a rectangular space and was built using red brick, incorporating both Sussex bond and Flemish bond with grey headers. It has a tiled roof. At the centre is a tall, three-bay barn with a granary above. This block features blank arches with stone impost blocks, divided by double pilasters and a plain stone cornice. The roof is tiled, and there are three round-headed doorcases and a hoist on the left-hand side. The ends of the barn have a circular blank and two Diocletian windows.
To the right of the barn is a lower two-bay building which was formerly an ox engine house, with cambered arches and impost blocks. Adjacent to this is a right-hand wing of similar height, featuring seven doors, five with cambered arches, and five semicircular openings. Originally, this wing comprised rooms for fodder, lodges for ten fatting oxen, a stable for horses or working oxen, a bull stall, and a waggon lodge.
A similar arrangement exists to the left of the barn/granary, including a two-bay structure with two cambered arches, formerly lodges for ten fatting oxen, and a left-side wing with nine semicircular arches, including two doors, one of which is blocked. This wing formerly comprised a fodder room, a store room for grain for fatting hogs, lodges for twenty fatting oxen, lodges for ten cows, a calf pen, and a slaughterhouse with an adjoining steaming house and cistern for hogmash. Rear of this wing was a series of pigsties and kennels for Spaniels and Pointers.
Internally, the buildings feature scientific king posts, an early use of this form in farm buildings. The barn/granary contains some reused domestic timbers, and there are good 19th-century cast iron and wood stall partitions.
