Description
The gates, gatepiers, and wall with railings to the west of South Lodge were built around 1900 for Sir George Barham, the founder of Express Dairies, who resided at Snape House. The structure incorporates two sections of railings dating from around 1700, originally from the forecourt of St Paul's Cathedral, which were removed in the late 19th century. The gates displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851 are also part of this installation. The low wall is made of local sandstone and features cast iron railings attached to rusticated stone gatepiers. These gatepiers are six feet high and are adorned with sculptured bears that hold a shield displaying the Barham Coat of Arms. The elaborate wrought iron gates include side panels with lozenge decoration and scrollwork.
