Description
Place Farmhouse is part of a large, E-shaped mansion built in the 16th century by Sir John Jefferay, Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer. The mansion subsequently fell into ruin, and the west wing was demolished in the early 18th century. The surviving central portion now serves as a farmhouse and is constructed of red brick with a hipped tiled roof. The fenestration includes casement windows with stone mullions and transoms. The north front features two windows of three lights each, with four-centred heads and a fluted frieze above, on both the ground and first floors. The first floor also has two windows with two tiers of three similar lights, but without a frieze. An 18th-century porch to the west features Ionic columns and a round-headed doorway with a semi-circular fanlight above a six-panelled door. The west front displays a window of two tiers of three lights with four-centred heads, a window of two square-headed lights, and a blocked window on the ground floor. The first floor has two windows of two tiers of square-headed lights and two tiny blocked windows. Three four-centred stone doorways with carved spandrels are present on the ground floor; two are blocked with red brick, one contains a window, and a further blocked doorway appears on the first floor. The south front has two square-headed windows of two tiers of three lights, and a chimney breast. A further L-shaped wing, likely of later date, projects to the rear, featuring square-headed windows with dripstones. To the east of the farmhouse are the brick arches of cellars and the remains of brick walls.
