Description

This barn, located 40 metres south west of Tanyard House, dates back to the 16th century or earlier and was associated with the tanning industry until 1886. It was reroofed and clad in the 18th century, with some modifications made in the 19th century. The structure features an oak timber frame, clad in Ashburnham brick arranged in a mixture of Sussex and English garden wall bond, with a weatherboarded gable on the south west side and a half-hipped peg-tiled roof.

The barn has a central midstrey and 18th-century outshots on either side of the south east. The south east side has one triangular buttress, while the south west side has four triangular buttresses and ventilation slits. There are some 20th-century window openings. Attached to the north is a 19th-century five-bay cartshed, which is not of special interest.

Inside, the barn has seven bays and is aisled. The bay to the north west of the midstrey dates to the 16th century or earlier, featuring curved windbraces, several jowled posts, and a repositioned top of a wallplate. The 19th-century bolted knees are found apart from the midstrey, and the aisle posts rest on padstones. The 18th-century roof includes staggered purlins and collar beams, with internal weatherboarding on the south east wall.
