Description
Priory Mill is a water mill located to the southwest of Michelham Priory. This mid-16th century building features a three-bay timber frame that was refronted around 1800. The exterior is made of red brick with grey headers in English bond on the ground floor, while the first floor is weatherboarded, including the gable end facing east. The mill has a hipped tiled roof sloping to the west and stands two storeys tall with two windows. The first floor has pivoting sash windows, and the ground floor has fixed sash windows. A central plank door on the first floor is accessed by wooden steps, with a fixed casement window below it from around 1800. The rear elevation includes two openings with pintle hinges.
A wooden water-wheel was installed in 1972 during the mill's restoration, replacing an iron water-wheel that had been removed in 1924-1925. Inside, the roof is constructed with side purlins and wind braces, featuring raking queen struts and a collar beam. The building has jowled posts and curved wind braces, with the sack hoist mechanism being the only early feature that remains. The earliest record of a water mill at Michelham Priory dates back to 1434, and this building appears on an estate map from 1667.
