Description
The Barbican Tower and Bridge over the Moat at Michelham Priory is a Grade I listed structure from the 15th century. It is situated at the center of the inner side of the north-west quarter of a moat that is fed by the River Cuckmere. The tower is a square building made of ashlar stone and has three storeys. The ground floor features a wide carriage archway with an elliptical head. On the first and second floors, there are two windows, each with two tiers of trefoil-headed lights, complete with stone mullions, transoms, and dripstones that have corbel heads. The tower is topped with a castellated parapet and a hipped tiled roof. On the south side, there is a rectangular projection that houses a vice staircase, which also has a hipped tiled roof. Adjacent to the tower is a stone bridge that spans the moat, featuring a round-headed arch and solid portions on either side, topped with a parapet. This bridge dates from the 16th century.
