Description

Burgh Hill House is a house dated 1821, located on Burgh Hill Road in Chiddingly. It is constructed of brick, featuring front and rear elevations in grey header bond with red brick dressings and end pilasters. The side elevations are in diaper bond with grey headers. The house has a tiled roof with end brick chimneystacks and is two storeys tall with attics, containing three windows.

The front elevation displays 12-pane sash windows on the left and a 16-pane horned sash window on the right, all set within cambered red brick architraves. There are end pilasters and a projecting central porch that is pedimented, featuring pilasters, a rectangular fanlight, and six-panel double doors. Behind these doors is another rectangular fanlight and six flush panelled doors. The house has a plinth, and the side elevations include protruding double flues with Diocletian windows at the corners.

On the left side, there is a one-storey service wing with a slate roof and an external brick chimneystack, as well as a section of curved brick wall topped with ball finials. The rear elevation has three mid-19th century dormers, with the central one being pedimented and the side ones curved, while the facade is otherwise similar to the front.

Inside, the house retains a complete period interior, featuring fireplaces with reeded surrounds, paterae, and firegrates, double doors with reeded surrounds and paterae, six-panel doors, a door with two oval cutouts, a staircase with stick balusters, and an open fireplace in the kitchen and bakehouse/brewhouse, which includes two bread ovens and a scientific king post roof.
