Description
Tapsells is a house located on Tapsells Lane in Wadhurst. It is a later 16th century two-bay house featuring an external chimneystack and an outshut, with a 19th century range added to the north. The north range has a ground floor made of red brick, while the first floor is tile hung, topped with a tiled roof and end brick chimneystacks. The building is two storeys high and has two windows, with 19th century triple casements and a central simple doorcase. The rear range is timber framed, tile hung on the first floor, and sandstone on the ground floor, featuring a steeply pitched tiled roof that is hipped at one end. It has a massive external chimneystack, with a sandstone base and 16th century brickwork on top. There are two 19th century casements and a 19th century porch. Inside, the frame is exposed, showcasing howled upright posts, a midrail, shutter grooves, and mortices for window mullions. There is an original two-plank door leading to the second floor and a rare survival of solid oak tread stairs. The interior also features an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, a chamfered spine beam, and exposed floor joists.
