Description

The New Inn is a public house and former hotel built in 1885 for the South Down & East Grinstead Brewery Company. It features red brick construction with limestone dressings and red clay-tiled roofs, including ridge and eaves stacks.

The layout includes a long public bar on the right side, which runs parallel to the road, with a small public room behind it. The central entrance leads to the hotel, while the large function room, previously a restaurant, is located on the left.

The exterior showcases a single-storey room on the left and a two-storey section on the right. The function room has a three-light mullioned window, with the lower lights featuring segmental heads and tracery lights divided by decorative mullions. The gable above includes half-timbering. The central entrance has etched glass in the door windows indicating 'Hotel Entrance', with a fanlight above that has a central mullion adorned with similar decorative details. The public bar features two two-light windows that match the others, and its entrance is sheltered by a projecting brick canopy with a round-arched head. This canopy rises to a crow-stepped gable topped with a central pinnacle, and the parapet has embattled features that break through the gambrel roof. On the right-hand return, there are two half-timbered gables.

Inside, the public bar has an elliptical arch supported by fluted console brackets, a simple panelled counter front, and a timber counter top. Original shelving, including a cash drawer, is present in the bar-back, along with a sash-windowed hatch leading to the corridor. The room contains two simple fixed benches, a wood-block floor, and matchboard dado panelling. Additional matchboard panelling is found in the rear public room, function room, and corridor, which also features an ornate cast-iron fireplace.

The New Inn is a rare example of a rural public house and hotel that has retained its original layout and fittings in nearly intact condition.
