Description
A threshing barn dating from the 16th century, located 25 metres south of Batsford Farmhouse. The barn is timber framed and was originally timber-framed and daubed, though the cladding has been replaced with weatherboarding and the roof is now corrugated iron, originally thatched. It comprises four bays, with a cart entrance on the north side, positioned in the second bay from the east. The roof is hipped.
The interior retains substantial timber-framed construction, including massive ground cills, end posts, bay posts and a wall plate. The best-preserved areas are the two eastern gable bays and the three north bays, showcasing lower panels with down-standing head braces and upper panels with up-standing foot braces, rails and mid-bay posts. The west gable and three bays of the south side have been partially replaced with posts only, retaining some original timbers. Three large principal trusses remain, with arched braces at the east end, a single arched brace at the centre; both braces are missing at the west. The roof is largely an 18th-century replacement, incorporating some reused rafters. One truss features queen post struts, clasped through purlins, 4 collars and a ridge beam. The tie beams have reported mortices suggesting an earlier crown post roof. A C1700 framed lean-to cowhouse is attached to the south-east. A late 19th-century six-bay cattle hovel is attached to the north-west, featuring good-quality framed bay divisions and lintols, a rear wall of brick, and an old tile roof.
