Description
Saxonbury Tower is an observation tower or folly, dated 1828 above the doorcase. It is part of a series of follies built for the Nevill estate. The tower is circular and consists of five stages, tapering towards the top. It is constructed of brown header bond brickwork on a tooled sandstone base, featuring Roman cement pseudo-machicolations at the parapet and roll-moulded bands between the floors. The tower has a conical iron roof, which is said to have been covered in copper at one time. It includes arrowslit windows with internally splayed embrasures. The doorcase is cambered arched and displays the date 1828 in shields on either side, along with a central coronet featuring the initials H and A. The door was missing at the time of the survey. Inside, there is a sandstone spiral staircase, although sections of the first and second stages were missing at the time of the survey.
