Description

The Former Colvin Bros. Filling Station is a 20th-century building characterized by its weatherboarded walls, except for the gable end of the canopy, which is rendered and features mock timber-framing. The roof is covered in concrete tiles, although the original covering is unknown and may have been clay tiles. A single brick chimney stack is present.

The building has a rectangular plan and is single-storey with an attic, topped by a half-hipped roof. At the rear, there is a single-storey outshut and a low two-storey extension, which is believed to be a slightly later addition.

The exterior features a half-hipped gable end that projects to create a canopy over the forecourt, supported by four square-section timber posts with stone bases and diagonal splat bracing at the top. Originally, petrol pumps were located between these posts. The gable end is rendered and painted white, adorned with black-painted vertical mock framing, and the eaves showcase scallop-edged bargeboards. The original entrance was a central door beneath the canopy, accompanied by a cashier's window to the right, which has since been replaced with a large plate glass frontage that includes a central door. The windows and doors on the sides and rear are timber and of various dates, generally not original.

The use of the attic storey is unclear, but it currently serves as a one-bedroom drivers' flat, featuring several roof-lights inserted into both pitches of the roof. Two brick piers topped with lanterns once flanked the site; the left one remains (without the lantern), while the right one has been removed.

Inside, the original simple layout is no longer visible; the main space has been subdivided into several offices and an L-shaped hallway, with modern fixtures and fittings throughout.
