Description
There are three chest tombs located approximately 20 meters south of the chancel at All Saints Church in Beckley. These tombs date from the mid-17th century.
The first chest tomb features a stone construction with a moulded top and base. The south face displays a nearly legible Latin inscription that reads: "THOMAS SHARPE FILIUS SU- RICHARDUS SHARPE DUS ECCLESIE DE BECKLEY TUNC TEMPORIS RECTOR POSUIT HOC MONUMENTUM PIETATIS ERGO."
The second chest tomb, dated 1644, commemorates Thomas Sharpe. It is also made of stone with a moulded top slab and base, and has an inscription on the south side that states: "HIC JACENT SERVETA CORVO PA THOM SHARPE FILIUM RICIARDI SHARPE DE BENENDEN GENEROSI QUI OBIIT ANNO AETATIS SUE 61 NOVEMBER 18 1644 ET ANNE VXORIS SUI OBIIT 19 AUGUST EODEM ANNO 1644." This tomb is notable for its combination of Latin text and Arabic numerals.
The third chest tomb is of a similar mid-17th century style, made of stone with a moulded top, although parts of one corner were not attached at the time of inspection. The inscription on the south side is illegible.
