Description
Tanyard House and Stores is a house dating from around 1450, with a cross-wing added in the mid-17th century, and it has been altered externally in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame, with brick underbuilding on the ground floor and tile-hanging above. It has a tile roof and consists of three bays in the main house, while the cross-wing is one bay wide and two bays deep, both being two storeys tall. The house has large-pane 19th-century sash windows and a brick porch with a gable and bargeboards, inscribed with "HB" for Hercules Brabazon. The cross-wing also has similar bargeboards. There is a tall shop front dating from around 1900 and a brick stack aligned with the porch. Inside, the jetty from the 15th century is preserved in the first bay, along with a moulded dais beam in the next bay, which was originally open. An unglazed diagonal mullion window remains on the first floor of the eastern wall. The cross-wing has always been floored and retains a significant amount of small framing, including the partition between the bays.
