Description

Bre Cottage is a cottage that dates from the late 18th century for the front range and the early 19th century for the parallel rear range. The front range features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding painted white, set on a brick basement plinth. The rear range is constructed of brick on the lower level and has a tile-hung upper storey. The cottage has slate roofs with end gables and four brick gable end stacks. It is two storeys tall with a basement beneath the front range.

The symmetrical front has two windows and a central single-storey gabled porch, which has a scalloped verge and barge boards. The panelled door to the porch includes a top panel that is glazed with bars arranged in a 2x2 pane configuration. The sidelights to the porch also have 2x2 panes. On either side of the porch are sash windows with glazing bars arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration, and these windows have side-hung, louvred timber shutters. On the first floor, there are two larger sash windows with glazing bars arranged in a 3x3 pane configuration.

On the right-hand gable end of the front range, there is a small canted oriel window to the right of the chimney stack, supported by a pair of moulded brackets and featuring a moulded cornice. The oriel has glazing bars in the front (2x3 panes) and in the side lights (1x3 panes). Above the oriel, on the first floor, there is a fixed sash window with 3x2 panes. A small single-storey lean-to outhouse has been added to the right-hand rear gable end, adjacent to the rear gable stack. On the first floor to the left of the stack, there is a two-light metal frame casement window with 6x4 panes. At the rear, there is a central doorway with a 20th-century glazed panel door and a three-light metal frame casement window to the left with 9x3 panes. On the first floor, there is a central late 19th-century sash window with vertical bars.

Inside, the cottage features exposed bridging beams over the ground floor, some vertical board-clad panelling, and vertical board doors. The rear range has a 19th-century quarry tile floor.
