Description

Great Wigsell is a large, irregular-shaped house primarily built in the early 17th century, restored by Sir Ernest George in 1905 after being unoccupied for several years. The original section, constructed by Henry English, is L-shaped with the staircase located in the angle and features a doorway dated 1641. It bears a strong resemblance to Batemans in Burwash, which dates to 1631. The house is built of ashlar with a tiled roof and has a main front that faces northwest. It consists of two storeys and an attic, with five windows and three gables that include attic windows and finials.

At the center of the façade is a two-storey porch topped with a gable, which features a flat archway and an enriched cornice with a cartouche above. The windows are casement style with two lights, stone mullions, and transoms. There are chimney breasts at both ends of the front and behind, topped with red brick stacks. The southeast wing has one gable and a gable end facing southeast. Parallel to this wing is an 18th-century addition made of ashlar with red brick dressings, featuring sash windows with intact glazing bars and a doorway with a rectangular fanlight. This section also has two storeys and an attic, with three windows and two dormers. Sir Ernest George extended the house at the southwest end during the 1905 restoration. Inside, there is an early 17th-century staircase and panelling. Notably, the house was the residence of Viscount Milner towards the end of his life.
