Description

House. Dating to the mid-16th century, the building began as a two-bay timber-framed hall and service building with a lean-to. Around 1600, a new floor was inserted into the hall, the lean-to was removed, and a two-story parlour bay was added. In the early 18th century, a two-flued chimney stack replaced a 16th-century chimney, a northern wing was added, and a lean-to was constructed, with further additions later in the 18th century. The exterior is mainly painted brick, with a rendered rear elevation, and a 20th-century tiled roof topped with two brick chimney stacks. The house is one or two stories high and has three windows, mostly 20th-century casements. The rear elevation features three windows, a pedimented dormer with tile hanging, and a three-light canted bay window to the ground floor, as well as a brick diagonal buttress.

The interior of the earliest section retains timbers from the 16th-century frame, particularly visible in the northern wall. These include jowelled wall posts, tension braces, a mid-rail, close-set studs, wall plates, a steeply-cambered tie-beam between bays, and rafters. The rear wall plate has mortices in the soffit indicating the former location of diamond-set mullioned windows. Original wavy joists are present in the left bay. The central bay, originally the right-hand side, features a 17th-century spine-beam with run-out stops to the chamfer, along with joists, and a deeply chamfered fireplace bressumer. 18th-century board doors are also present. Further interior features include exposed beams in the lounge and, on a first floor, jowled parts and curved tension braces.
