Description
There are four chest tombs located approximately 2 meters south of the chancel at All Saints Church in Beckley. These tombs date from the late 17th century to the early 18th century.
The first tomb is from the late 17th to early 18th century, made of stone with a moulded cornice and base, featuring moulded end panels and pilasters, and resting on two stone steps. It has no surviving inscription.
The second tomb, of late 17th century type, is also made of stone and has a moulded top and base on a stone step. It bears an inscription on the east side, which is mostly illegible except for a quotation from Proverbs Chapter 10.
The third tomb is an early 18th century type with a flat slab top and a moulded base. It has no inscription, and at the time of inspection, two of the side panels were not in their original position.
The fourth tomb, dating to the early 18th century, features a moulded top slab with a crest and an inscription that is now illegible. It has a moulded plinth on a stone step, along with fielded panels and corner balusters. The east panel was not attached to the structure during the inspection.
