Description

The Old Brick House is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century. It has been refronted in the early 19th century, featuring brick in Sussex bond on the ground floor and tile hanging with bands of plain and fishscale tiles on the first floor. The house has a half hipped tiled roof with a central brick chimneystack. It is two storeys high with attics in the gable end and has three windows in the main range. The late 20th-century wooden casements have replaced earlier metal casements of a similar style. The central doorcase has a flat hood supported by brackets and a half-glazed door. There are buttresses on the right side elevation.

An early 19th-century T-wing is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond and features an end brick stack with one 20th-century casement. Inside, the left side room on the ground floor has part of a winder stair that intrudes into the room. The right side room includes an open fireplace with a wooden lintel and a central axial beam that has a chamfer and lambs tongue stops. An original three-plank door to the right of the fireplace leads to an oak winder staircase that extends through two floors, dividing into attic rooms. The first floor has jowled corner posts, while the attic reveals visible through purlins, principal rafters, and collar beams. Several original plank doors are present, and many rooms retain original oak floorboards.
