Description

The Ice House is an early 19th-century ice house located on Bohemia Road in Hontye Park. It is believed to have been part of Westel Brisco's improvements to the Bohemia Estate after he purchased the house and grounds in 1831, although it first appeared on the Ordnance Survey Map in 1873. The structure is built of coursed local stone and features a dome covered in cement render, with remnants of brick and stone from a collapsed entrance tunnel.

The ice house consists of a semi-subterranean, beehive-shaped chamber that measures 3.7 meters square and stands 5.5 meters high, built into a north-facing bank. The main entrance was located on the south-west side and accessed the chamber through a short tunnel, which has since been demolished. At the time of the last inspection, the outline of a door was visible at low level, although its exact location was unknown. The chamber's floor included a drain outlet. The site was overgrown during the inspection, leaving only the top of the dome and parts of the entrance tunnel visible.

The ice house was situated next to a courtyard that fronted Bohemia House, which was demolished around 1972. At the time of inspection, this was the only known ice house in the Borough of Hastings. A survey drawing of the ice house was produced in 1984 by the Planners Department of Hastings Council.
