Description
Eastbourne Signal Box is a two-storey building, notable for its tall locking room made of brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring red brick voussoirs, cornice, and banding. The upper storey is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with horizontally-sliding sash windows. It has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by curved timber brackets that have distinctive cuboid stops.
The exterior includes five pointed-arched openings facing the track, separated by pilasters, each with six-pane timber-framed windows. There is an additional window on the north-east elevation. The south-west end features an arched entrance with its original door set in a recessed panel. Access to the upper storey is via a two-stage timber dogleg staircase at the south-west end. The original glazed entrance door has been complemented by a new entrance with a flat-roofed, weatherboarded, and glazed porch. While the remaining windows on this elevation have been replaced, the curved-ended overlights remain. Most of the sliding six-pane sash windows retain their original rounded upper corners and overlights. A window cleaning gantry with metal railings is present outside the windows. The eaves are supported by timber brackets, and the oversailing upper storey is held up by cast-iron brackets, with supporting metal girders on the rear elevation. The building still has its metal rainwater goods.
Inside, the space was divided into two rooms with a timber partition when the original 108 lever frame was replaced with a 72 lever frame in 1935. The now disused frame, which has some cut down levers, is located in the north-eastern room. The south-western room contains a modern control panel, which is not of special interest. The interior features a boarded ceiling and walls. Although the locking room was not inspected, it is understood to still retain its locking mechanism.
