Description
The former service block adjoining Baylis House to the northeast is a Grade I listed building, dating from the mid to late 18th century. Constructed of red brick with a slate roof, it is a single-storey structure featuring a gauged brick cornice band, a coped parapet, and triangular pedimented gables at both the front and back. The central three bays slightly project and each has a clock in the tympanum. The gable ends are parapeted and topped with globe finials, while there are two off-centre ridge stacks on the left and right, and a large panelled stack at the rear. A central square timber arched cupola, complete with an incurved lead cap, globe finial, and weathervane, adds to the building's character.
The southeast front consists of nine bays with glazing bar sashes. To the left, a quadrant arcade features four stone Tuscan columns that connect the service block with the main house, behind a forecourt wall. Inside, the ground floor includes an eight-bay groin vaulted corridor leading to store rooms on the southeast side, and a double-height former kitchen on the southwest side that has a large fireplace. A clock in the southeast pediment is dated 1735, and while the building is attributed to John James, it is likely from a later date.
