Description
The former railway station and waiting room, known as Building No 1/47, was constructed in 1888 and has since been altered in the 20th century. It is now used as offices. The building is made of red brick laid in stretcher bond and features cast-iron columns that support a wooden canopy. The canopy has been infilled with vertical wooden boards, and the roof has been replaced with corrugated iron. There are brick end stacks.
The exterior consists of a long single-storey range with a front canopy supported by an arcade featuring decorative arched braces and scalloped, vertically boarded eaves. The canopy has been partially underbuilt in the 20th century. A central entrance leads into the building, which has sash windows with either 12 or 16 panes. The chimneys are panelled and adorned with decorative terracotta at the arched openings and corbelled cornices. The gables on the returns are treated as pediments and feature stepped dentilled bands.
Historically, this building was constructed as a shelter for the Royal Family and their party during visits to the yard. It is part of a group that includes the Royal Shelter.
