Description

The Lion Gate is a town gate that now serves as an entrance to the naval base. It was originally built in 1778, dismantled in the 19th century, and re-erected in its current location in 1929, as indicated by a date stone. The gate is constructed of ashlar and features a central round archway with a tripartite keystone and voussoirs that align with the courses of the rusticated ashlar surround. Flanking the archway are paired pilasters with vermiculated bands that support a cornice and pediment, which includes a lion couchant holding a flag. On either side of the central arch are similar pedestrian archways with round windows above them. To the right of the central arch is a block inscribed with "The Lion Gateway Portsea. Built 1778. Incorporated in this building in the year 1929." The current appearance of the entrances is largely a result of the 1929 rebuilding. The archway was originally one of the town gateways of Portsea.
