Description
The Methodist Church, built in 1895 and designed by architect John Wills, is a notable red brick structure with stone dressings, coped verges, and a concrete tile roof topped with a bell turret. The church has a rectangular plan with five bays and features internal galleries on three sides, which are accessible via stair turrets located at the south-west and north-west corners. An internal porch leads to a double entrance approached by a double stair, with a basement below.
The west gable end is buttressed and flanked by buttressed tourelles, featuring a large rose window supported by six lancets set on a moulded string. The gable has a double porch with two ornate double doors and two-light windows in the stair turrets. The north and south fronts are symmetrical, showcasing three tiers of two-light windows between full-height buttresses.
The west front includes a double stair with gatepiers, gates, and walls extending to the south-west and north-west corners of the church. The stair has moulded ashlar coping and recessed panels in the retaining wall facing the street, along with a simple cast-iron handrail. The cast-iron gates are set between square piers topped with moulded pyramid ashlar caps, which are decorated with trefoil motifs, and two ornate electric lamp standards are present.
Inside, the church features a wooden gallery supported by cast-iron columns with foliate capitals, along with a wooden balcony. The hammerbeam roof is ceiled and boarded. The interior contains a good collection of original fittings, including a reader's desk and an organ bay at the east end, reflecting a rather opulent design for a Methodist church, indicative of the affluence and vitality of the congregation at the turn of the century.
