Description

No. 120 Woodcote Road is a gas company showroom and stores, later used as carpet showrooms. It was built between 1929 and 1930 for the Croydon Gas Company by architect A Douglas Robinson in a Spanish style. The building features a steel frame with a plastered exterior and a hipped pantiled roof, complemented by brick chimneystacks topped with ceramic pots.

Situated on a corner site, the central part of the building is set diagonally and consists of two storeys with splayed corners. It has a cornice made of curved tiles and three 12-pane sash windows, with a decorative motif above the central window. The ground floor is accessed through a large corner entrance that has a decorative architrave and displays the coat of arms of the Croydon Gas Company above. There are two radiating arms of showroom windows, which are also crowned by pantiles. An archway is located on the right-hand side, along with a pair of wooden gates featuring large L-shaped iron hinges.

The building's layout originally included showrooms, a shop, and accounts on the ground floor, while the first floor housed a lecture hall and room settings. Notable original interior features include a stone staircase with an iron handrail, a tripartite round-headed staircase window with cable-moulded colonnettes, a stone fireplace with a panel and twisted columns, another stone fireplace with pilasters, brackets, and a floral panel in the former lecture hall, a platform in the former lecture hall, a cast iron decorative skylight, original oak doors with ornate plaster mouldings, gas light fittings, and sanitaryware. A showroom of a similar style at Thornton Heath has been altered, but the one at Wallington has a more interesting plan.
