Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Street. The church features a Perpendicular style west tower, while the main body of the church was rebuilt according to designs by John James in 1714-15. The tower is constructed from rubblestone and consists of three stages, with corner buttresses, a battlemented parapet, and perpendicular tracery. A polygonal staircase turret is situated on the south-east corner.
The nave and aisles are made of plum brick with red dressings, showcasing rubbed and gauged brickwork. The church has a five-bay nave, with the three central bays projecting forward under a pediment. It features giant order pilasters and a two-storey elevation, with segmental windows on the lower level and round-headed windows above. The base is made of Portland stone, and there is a heavy cornice.
Inside, the galleried space is supported by timber fluted Corinthian columns. The interior includes an original wooden reredos and metal altar rails. Notable monuments within the church include one for Francis Parlton, who died in 1642, located at the east end of the south aisle, and another for William Humble, who died in 1680. The church is also the burial site of Alexander Pope, who died in 1744, as well as other notable figures such as Kneller. A monument to Challoner Ogle, created by Rysbrack, is also present.
