Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church built between 1891 and 1893 by Charles Innes. A north-west vestry was added in 1936, designed to match the original style. The church is constructed of red brick in English bond, with stone dressings and a tiled roof. It features a basilical plan, with the nave and chancel combined, flanked by aisles and a clerestorey. The west end includes an apsidal-ended baptistery, while the east end has an apsidal shape, and there is a Lady Chapel at the north-east.
The windows are primarily lancets, arranged in pairs for the aisles and clerestorey, with buttresses separating each pair. The Lady Chapel showcases paired gables divided by brick and stone buttresses, featuring triple lancets set within giant arches. The church has a plain arched entrance on the north side and a main entrance through a south porch, which includes an arched entrance, benches, and wrought iron gates. The south side also has a gabled sacristy with a triple lancet window and a corner turret topped with a conical roof. The 1936 north-west vestry is similarly built of red brick in English bond, featuring paired lancets, an arched doorcase, and a flat roof.
Inside, the church has a six-bay arcade supported by circular piers with foliate capitals. The wooden roof is of the arch-braced type, adorned with pendants supported by thin colonnettes. The baptistery contains a circular stone font and encaustic tiles, along with original wooden pews. There is a square arched wooden pulpit and a brass lectern on a wooden base. The Lady Chapel features wrought iron gates, encaustic tiles, and a brass screen. The chancel includes a low stone wall with wrought iron gates and original choir stalls. The organ loft is supported by paired arches on a circular pier, with a wrought iron screen above that displays two statues of angels. The sanctuary boasts a fine wooden altar table with paintings of seven saints and a marble reredos. The church is enhanced by good contemporary stained glass throughout, predominantly depicting saints, while the Lady Chapel features scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, with the artist unknown at the time of inspection.
