Description
The former Tramways Sub-Station at the rear of No 72 Chiswick High Road was built between 1899 and 1901 by architect William Curtis Green. This monumental classical building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It features a five-bay front that faces a courtyard, with the end bays slightly projecting and containing entrances. The windows are adorned with distinctive hoods between the bays. The building is topped with a bold bracketed cornice and a heavy banded parapet that has concave recesses above the pavilions. A striking sculptured panel above one of the entrances bears the inscription "LUET," which stands for London United Electric Tramways. Inside, the building boasts enriched ironwork on the staircase and a colonnaded gallery.
