Description
The Rainham War Memorial is a clock tower built in 1920 by Mr. Vinton, a local builder. Constructed from red Belgian brick, it features Portland and cast stone dressings. The tower is hexagonal and has clock faces on three sides. At the base, there is a sloping section that displays the names of those who died in the wars, along with stone blocks inscribed with "LEST WE FORGET" at the corners. The structure includes gauged arches leading to a niche and doorway, as well as inscription panels on the sides and narrow pilasters at the angles. The upper part of the memorial is adorned with a balustrade. It is enclosed by iron railings.
Historically, the memorial was unveiled by Colonel Whitmore, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, on November 7, 1920. It was a practical form of remembrance, prominently located in front of the parish church, and cost £60 to build.
