Description
Wembley Arena, formerly known as The Empire Pool, is a significant building designed by Sir E Owen Williams and constructed in 1934 for The Empire Games. It features a reinforced concrete frame with three hinged arches that span 240 feet, which was the largest concrete span in the world at the time of its completion. The pool itself measures 200 feet in length and 60 feet in width, and there is a deck that was used for ice skating. The building's end opens up and used to lead to sunbathing terraces and lawns. The sides of the structure are supported by 15 massive concrete buttresses, while the ends are adorned with 20 narrow lights that increase in height from the edges to the center. Wembley Arena was also used for the 1948 Olympic Games.
