Description

The Men of Finchley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1925, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and bronze and is located in front of the Finchley United Services Club on Ballards Lane.

The memorial features a granite monolith set on a two-stepped base. On the east face, there is a bronze cross with a figure of a soldier, flanked by the busts of a sailor and an airman, all cast in relief. An inscription at the foot of the soldier reads, "AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE/ SUN AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." Below the bronze cross, the east face displays an inscription in raised bronze lettering that states, "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ MEN OF FINCHLEY WHO/ BY SERVICE ON LAND SEA/ AND IN THE AIR GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1919/ 1939 – 1945."

The memorial is accompanied by two relocated tablets that list the names of staff from the Metropolitan Electric Tramway Finchley Depot and the Hendon Garage who died in the First World War. These tablets are set into the ground on slanted stone bases, with the Metropolitan Electric Tramway Finchley Depot memorial located to the north and the Hendon Garage memorial, dated 1921, to the south. The memorial is situated on a grassed area that is enclosed by hedging to the north, west, and south, and features a later-added brick dwarf wall topped with metal railings to the east, which includes a central gate.
