Description
The Odeon Cinema is a building constructed in 1934 by Edgar Simmons as a County Cinema, which was taken over by Odeon before its completion. It features a steel frame clad in brick, with a rendered centrepiece and a sheet metal roof. The layout includes a foyer on two levels that leads to a double-height auditorium with a balcony. The rendered, three-storey, six-bay rounded centrepiece has half-glazed entrance doors and six Moorish-style lancets that rise two storeys. This is flanked by brick towers adorned with red brick diaperwork and recessed panels.
Inside, the foyer includes a Moorish-style paybox and original doors, along with a moulded 'marble' column leading to an octagonal light well, and a decorative metal balustrade around the balcony and stairs. The auditorium showcases fine Art Deco design, featuring stepped mouldings around stepped Moorish lancets, decorative metal grilles, a cornice with devrons, and ceiling decoration based on octagonal patterns. The central octagon is surrounded by stepped mouldings and Art Deco "strapwork," and the proscenium arch also has stepped mouldings.
