Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built around 1891 by J L Pearson, is an impressive example of restrained Gothic architecture. Constructed from coursed squared stone and topped with tiled roofs, the church features a nave, aisles, a chancel, and north and south transepts, along with an unfinished north-west tower. The five-bay nave is supported by flying buttresses and the interior is vaulted throughout. The apse is designed in the style of 13th-century French architecture. Notable features include intricate ironwork, a font with a very elaborate Gothic cover, and a fine collection of stained glass windows by Clayton and Bell.
