Description

A row of houses located in Rutland Gate, dating from the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco with slate mansard roofs. They consist of four storeys plus a basement and mansard attics, with each house originally three windows wide. The ground floor is characterised by channelling. Projecting Doric porches are present. The windows are square-headed on the lower floors, with segmental heads to the third floor. First-floor windows are grouped together and sit beneath an entablature, flanked by Corinthian half columns. A continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor. The second-floor windows have cornices, with the central window of each house pedimented and featuring a balustraded window. The windows are sash windows with plate glass. A dentil cornice runs along the top of the building, though this has been simplified on some houses. Neo-Grec designed cast iron area railings are present. Numbers 63, 64, and 65 are designed to accommodate the narrowing of the square, stepping inward and featuring some canting. The row forms part of a coherent scheme with numbers 23-42 and 45, 46 and 47.
