Description

A row of houses dating from the mid-19th century, located on the east side of Rutland Gate. The buildings are constructed of stucco with slate mansard roofs. The row comprises numbers 23 to 42, each house being three windows wide. The ground floor features channelling, while projecting Doric porches are present. The windows are square-headed, except for those on the third floor which are segmental. First-floor windows are grouped together beneath an entablature and are flanked by Corinthian half columns, with a continuous cast iron balcony extending across the first floor. Second-floor windows have cornices, and the central window of each house is pedimented with balustraded windows. Sashes with plate glass are used throughout. A dentil cornice is present, though simplified on some houses. There are cast iron area railings in a neo-Grec design. The row forms part of a cohesive design alongside numbers 45, 46, 47 and 48-65 Rutland Gate.
