Description
Numbers 1 to 12 Park Square West comprise a terrace of town houses built between 1823 and 1825 by John Nash as part of his Regent’s Park Crown Estate development. The terrace is a mirror image of Park Square East, located in the London Borough of Camden, and the end and central three houses are set forward. The buildings are constructed of stucco with slate roofs. The advanced houses are four storeys high, including an attic storey, while the intervening houses are three storeys high with a mansard roof, all set above basements. The façades have three-window fronts, with the central break featuring two-window fronts flanking a central three-window section. Doorways and ground floor windows are set within an engaged Ionic colonnade; the central break is varied with rusticated astylar treatment. Panelled doors are approached by flights of steps with rectangular loop-patterned fanlights. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes, and those on the first floor are arcaded with keystones and moulded imposts. A cornice sits over the second floor, with secondary cornices to the attic storeys over the centre and ends, incorporating balustraded parapets concealing dormered mansards. The terrace is fronted by Grecian spearhead cast iron area railings. Originally planned by Nash as a circus, akin to Park Crescent, Park Square forms the formal approach to Regent’s Park from Portland Place.
