Description

Southwark Park School is a school and schoolkeeper's house built between 1873 and 1874, with an extension added in 1899. Designed by E.R. Robson for the London School Board, the building is constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and features a slate roof. The main block facing Southwark Park is two storeys high and has a rectangular plan with a seven-window range. The 1899 extension complements the original style, and there is an attractive schoolkeeper's house with a Dutch gable facing Southwark Park Road.

The exterior has a symmetrical front with a parapet that is interrupted by a shaped gable. The windows are framed by a two-dimensional grid of red brick pilasters, cornices, and string courses that enhance the elevation. Most windows are segmental-arched, with a tripartite window under the shaped gable featuring a segmental-arched centre light and flat-arched flanking lights. The first-floor windows in the outer paired ranges are topped by pediments that are incorporated into the parapet. Below these windows, there are two sculptural reliefs depicting children learning, each with an inscription panel that reads "School Board for London" and "Southwark Park Schools." The south elevation and rear of the building also feature shaped gables, a motif that continues in the ranges leading to the courtyard at the back. The courtyard is a picturesque space, although it includes buildings from at least two different periods. All the glazing is of an authentic design, featuring casements with fixed or pivoting lights above, and the north side has 8x8 sash windows with fixed lights above. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a fine example of an early school designed by Robson, whose style would greatly influence later school boards across the country.
