Description

The Church of St Margaret is a Grade II* listed building located on Lee Terrace in South East London. It was constructed between 1839 and 1841 by John Brown of Norwich, replacing an earlier church designed by Joseph Gwilt that collapsed. Only the base of the older tower remains. The church was restored and enlarged in 1876 by James Brooks, who added a chancel, aisles, porches, and a new roof.

Architecturally, the church features a nave, aisles, a west tower, north and south porches, and a chancel, all designed in a 13th-century style. It has paired lancet windows with nook shafts and hoodmoulds, a corbelled cornice, and a parapet adorned with tall octagonal pinnacles. The square tower has a tall lower stage with clock faces set under gables, an octagonal bell drum with cusped lancets beneath crocketed hoods, and a plain spire above. The exterior is finished in Roman cement with freestone dressings and a spire.

Inside, the church has a five-bay nave and aisles of nearly equal width, featuring tall arcades and wood rib vaults. There are wrought iron screens leading to the chancel and chancel aisles, as well as a marble-lined sanctuary and Lady Chapel. Additionally, there are two small 16th-century brasses depicting female figures.
