Description

The monument to Ives Hurrey is a funerary structure located in Lee Old Churchyard, erected around 1830 to commemorate Ives Hurrey, who died in the same year. The monument takes the form of a stone urn with an acanthus design at the base, set upon a low plinth. It features two stone and one brick plinth beneath it, and an inscription runs around the top of the urn. The terminal of the urn has been removed, and the tomb originally had a railed enclosure.

Lee Old Churchyard is home to several notable monuments that reflect its Georgian history as a retirement area for City merchants and individuals associated with the Greenwich and Deptford shipyards. In the center of the churchyard are the remains of the tower from the former medieval Church of St Margaret, which is listed as Grade II. The current Church of St Margaret, built between 1839 and 1841, is located to the south side of Lee Terrace and is listed as Grade II*. The churchyard has later tombs that were primarily used from the 1840s to the 1870s, with a decline in usage following the opening of Hither Green Cemetery in 1873.

The tomb of Ives Hurrey is recognized for its architectural quality as an early 19th-century Greek Revival style monument, despite the loss of its urn's terminal. It meets the criteria for listing as a commemorative monument.
