Description

Houses, built between 1934 and 1936 and designed by Wills and Kaula. The buildings occupy a block between Whitehead’s Grove and Sprimont Place and are arranged around two quadrangles, separated by College Place, which is accessed through pointed arched openings. The architectural style is nominally Tudor Revival but simplified, with a focus on extensive areas of brickwork and tiling. The houses are two and three storeys high, with a scattered window arrangement. The roofs of the interior ranges are parapetted. The overall appearance is achieved through variations in window placement and a limited range of architectural details, particularly shallow, projecting bays. Original designs are retained for the doors and casements. Notable features include stone pilastrades and stone colonnades at the centre of each quadrangle; the pilastrades are between canted bays, and the colonnades feature round-arched windows. Original rainwater goods and plaques inscribed with dates are also present. The listing covers the buildings along Whitehead’s Grove, concluding at the square turret near the corner. Specifically excluded from the listing are a corner shop at numbers 6 to 8 Elystan Street, and associated garage blocks with housing above at numbers 44 to 66 (even) Elystan Place.
